Free Kayaking
Free kayaking in NYC? Yes please!
Who wouldn’t want to spend an afternoon leisurely paddling around pristine crystal clear blue waters?
Yeah, and then there is the murky Hudson River.
Long gone are the days when swimming in the former superfund site was a Fear Factor-worthy endeavor. The river clean-up has been a huge success and the water quality has greatly improved.
Besides, most healthy costal estuaries are murky.
New York, being a port city, has surprisingly many water sport opportunities to be had on multiple locations in our fair city, most free and staffed by helpful volunteers. In general a safety few rules need to be observed: all participants must know how to swim, kids under 16 must paddle with a parent or an adult over 18. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Most boat houses supply the kayaks, paddles, offer assistance out on the water and life jackets. Equipment is assigned first come first serve and when busy, paddle times may be limited to about 20 minutes. Bring some sunscreen and a change of clothes, you will get a wet bottom and feet.
